In ways I can't explain, I feel like this Halloween has been less spooky than usual. At least that's how I've felt about it. I don't want to say my Halloween this year was a bad one, it was just a non-eventful one when compared to Halloweens of the past (especially 2019 which was the most triumphant Halloween of my life). It really has been a bit lackluster tho, which is a shame because it was such a strong start.
This month I saw screenings of the original Universal movies "Dracula" and "Frankenstein", which was amazing. Of course, I also went to New York Comic Con. I didn't get to go do any apple picking, or check out the pumpkin patch like I normally do, but I did drink a ton of seasonal drinks like pumpkin spice coffee. But I don't know, I guess the year the spirit really isn't in me.
I rediscovered this old picture of when I was a little boy celebrating my first Halloween with friends. My mom says she wasn't sure how to celebrate since she wasn't born in America and Halloween was never really part of her personal culture, so she took some advice from friends and bought me a simple Mickey Mouse costume by the famed Ben Cooper company. I loved it, honestly. I think all the kids I was hanging out with that day wore their own Ben Cooper costumes but I can't remember what they wore, it's been too long, I must have been in kindergarten or something.
It's a beautiful memory of my youth. This photo comes from my late grandfather's collection and when I found it I was in total shock because I didn't think any evidence of this costume existed. This year I don't have a costume, or anything to do for that matter, which stinks, but it's hardly the end of the world. I might even have to work on Halloween. There's always next year so hopefully I'll be better prepared for it.

October sure it flying by. The last few days have brought with it such nice cool Fall weather. Everyone is digging out their winter clothes and I have been wearing a hoodie nonstop. It's great.
This really is my favorite time of year. I love the atmosphere and aesthetics of Fall. It's all so cozy. It's a shame we have to work during this season. I would love to just go out and bask in it and really breathe it all in.
So the quest for more Halloween themed snacks continues. My roommate surprised me with this Krispy Skreme Spellbook filled with Halloween donuts! They're really beautifully made, but they always are. I think the cauldron donut is my favorite this year. It's a cookies n' creme donut, with green creme filling, sprinkles and a pretzel stick for stirring.
I finally managed to find some Mountain Dew Voo Dew this season. It really took me a while but my local 711 never lets me down. The mystery flavor this year is without question "Skittles". In previous years it was a bit more subtle, but this year it is an exact 1-1 flavor. It's really something honestly, just one sip and it triggered something in my brain and I knew what it was.
And Carvel is doing their HOCUS POCUS shakes for a second year in a row, but this time they have three different shakes based on that cult family film! I do wish they'd bring back the marshmallow slime shake from 2019, but these are pretty delicious too. Anyway, last year's shake was a cookies n' creme flavored one, so I got Mary's Divine Cookies n Creme shake this year to start it off. Like last year these shakes come in collectors cups, but also spoons! This collab between Carvel and HOCUS POCUS is of course a promotion for Freeforms's 31 Nights of Halloween where they show the film HOCUS POCUS a bunch of times.
So far there's been some fun stuff this year. I hope to find some more goodies before the season is over.
This years New York Comic-Con went pretty well, all things considered. I only had a pass for Sunday but everything felt as it should have. The crowd did feel smaller, and the checking in process did have a few more steps, but it was all a small price to pay for a fun day.
My favorite vendors weren't there this year, the ones who sell loose toys and figures out of tubs, so I decided to check out the cosplayers and bigger tables. I did swing by Artist Alley but sadly nothing really struck me like I hoped it would. Also, no homemade masks for sale; I thought for sure artists would be bringing their own homemade masks to sell at the con but maybe the time has passed for that sort of thing already.
The giant Super Saiyan Ape Vegeta was amazing! It stood like three stories tall and had glowing eyes! It was without question my favorite set-up at the whole show. Even non-DBZ fans were amazed by it!
There was a small booth for the film Mandy that also sold Kevin Smith stuff. I purchased a Chedder Goblin plush doll and they gave me a real box of Cheddar Goblin macaroni & cheese! Amazing! What a fun novelty to have. I loved the movie Mandy, and the Cheddar Goblin was a total highlight for me!
There were a lot of really well done and beautiful cosplays this year, but these were some of my faovorites:
The only "event" style thing I attended was Chucky's ice cream truck, which was there to promote the new series on SyFy. They handed out free Chucky face masks to anyone standing on line. It was a very long wait but it was a nice way to pass the time. I took a bunch of pictures of the cosplayers, got some stickers and free ice cream from the truck, and had some fun conversations with other con-goers.
It was a really casual time. After the con, my friends and I took a trip to one of our favorite local diners and had our traditional post-NYCC meal. I don't have any real heavy thoughts about the con. I do wish we didn't have to get our passes scanned, download an app for our vaccination card, and walk through metal detectors, but that's just how things got to be right now. I still had fun and it was still a enjoyable event. Hopefully next year things will feel more full of life.
I have been stuffing my face with candy since late September and I couldn't be happier. Every day the leafs get a bit darker, the air a bit colder, and you can feel the remnants of Summer dying with every moment. It makes me feel alive.
There's all sorts of stuff to talk about; new Halloween candy, the new Carvel/Hocus Pocus promotion going on, the fact that I am going to NYCC this weekend, but that's all for another day I think.
Recently I took a trip to Lot-Less, where all toy lines go to die, and I picked up some Flush Force and Ready2Robot toys. Loads of fun.
I've gotten Flush Force before. I feel like they're inspired by the Ghoulies poster where the little fish Ghoulie is sticking out of the toilet. These are brightly colored little mutants who live in a toilet and exist to gross out humans and I love them. Funny enough, my favorite one from this pack was the angry little pink bar of soap; truly the outsider among his Flush Force brethren.
The Flush Force cartoon has a Robot Chicken feel to it.
These Ready2Robot guys are pretty interesting too. Smaller than the Flush Force mutants, they come in these slime capsules and are meant to be pilots for robots toys that I have never seen. Very anime inspired. Reminds me of the pilots in Evangelion or Outlaw Star. Each figure is wholly unique, and is normally some sort of monster or robot or robot, but my favorite is of course the weird little nerd apparantly named "Homework".
The slime in the capsules is super watery and oozy. I can't imagine there's too much play value to it, but it was definitely fun for a bit. I don't really get what the slime has to do with the toys tho. It looks like the capsules don't get loaded into the robots, and the toys don't shoot or ooze slime. I mean it's great they have it, and I'm sure kids can find something useful for the slime but I'm personally at a loss. Guess I'm not that creative.
The robots looks rad as hell though, and have that slight anime aesthetic I mentioned. And like Flush Force, there is a Ready2Robot cartoon on YouTube. It's done a cel-shaded, CGI animation style. Humorous enough. Definitely would have kept my attention if I were a kid.
In other news, in my attempt to watch messed up and spooky movies this season I've been watching old Full Moon/Charles Band films.
I hadn't seen From Beyond in decades. It's still great though and I loved every moment of it. Real fucked up shit in this movie that I just could not recall watching when I was a kid. I must have seen an edited version or something. There's something totally unnerving going on the entire time and the effects are just terrific and absolutely hold up. It was probably cutting edge at the time.
And I do know there's supposed to be a spiritual sequel to From Beyond with the movie The Resonator: Miskatonic U, and it looks pretty good.
This was my first time seeing Shadowzone though, and it was totally by accident. I watched it on autoplay right after I was done with Creepozoids. Shadowzone was shockingly compelling. Everyone involved was such a distinct character it was easy to keep up with all of their stories. It has the same sort of feel as From Beyond as well, like they were cut from the same cloth. That whole Lovecraft-cosmic horror twinkle to it. James Hong is just wonderful as Dr. Fleet as well, I thought he really brought a tangible realness to his part. The creature, "John Doe", was interesting as well. Definitely reminiscent to The Thing (like the poster implies).
Creepozoids was fun and schlocky but it was also distractingly inspired by Alien. I still loved it of course, and I loved that the backdrop of the story was probably a bigger story but we're just witnessing this one little nugget of the world where these characters exist in. So after a nuclear apocalypse, and a still active world war, a handful of deserters hide from toxic rain in an abandoned laboratory where there's some sort of mutant monster hiding. The intentions of the monster are never really made clear, or what it's purpose is, but it makes for a fun monster movie. But it is without question a microbudget Alien for sure.

So my absolute favorite food is Salisbury steak. It's not something I grew up with, it's just something I ordered once from a diner and it sent me over the moon. The modern version of Salisbury steak is filled with bread crumbs, egg, and is usually floating in some sort of sauce or gravy. I love it. I think it's a really good, filling, nourishing and easily digestible food. I like it better than regular Hamburg steak, which can usually be too dense or salty, and I think I like it more than hamburgers (although I am not married to that thought). I'd say the only thing better than Salisbury steak is an actual steak from a place that knows how to cook them properly. That aside, Salisbury steak is tops for me.
Imagine my surprise when I learned about its creator, Dr. Salisbury, and the fad diet he created around this meal. I really had no idea, so imagine my surprise when I learned this history. Apparently created to help with the body to heal itself from disease, ailments, and toxins, Dr. Salisbury created his now famous "lean meat cakes" as part of a regiment to help the sick regain their health and vitality. He wasn't a quack doctor either, he had all the right credentials and training and experience to run the experiments needed to come up with this diet, but this was in the early days of germ theory so it all seems primitive these days.
I may actually try out this diet of hot waters, soft meats, and crackers. My current diet isn't too far off honestly, and experimenting with what I eat sounds like fun. In the past I tried the GM Diet with great success, so maybe this will be just as beneficial for me.
There are other recipes in Dr. Salisbury's book, "The Relation of Alimentation and Disease", but they weren't as popular. Maybe I'll try those in the future too. I expect to be doing a lot of Googling to try and figure out some of the old timey lingo and nomenclature for some of the foods he mentions tho.

I'm not sure when Halloween became a months spanning event but I am so glad for it. When I was a kid it was just something we looked forward to sometime near the end of October but now the vibe starts in September! Amazing!
And because Halloween snacks have started to arrive in some stores starting in late August around my neighborhood I have been destroying my stomach and teeth with candy for days now and i couldn't be happier for it. There's some really fun stuff coming out too and I can't wait.
So far my favorite are the Warheads Sour Body Parts gummies. And I'm heartbroken Zombie Skittles aren't back again this year but thankfully I still have a bag for emergency purposes. Skittles Shriekers are okay I guess but they don't have the taste of rotting meat like Zombie Skittles do.
Oh and of course there's Halloween cereal out there now. I found some of the Addams Family tie-in Kellog's cereal and picked up the Lurch flavored one. Man, chocolate frosted cereal with a lot of marshmallows; this is the stuff I dreamed of as a kid. All my mom ever got was Farina or Cheerios. I mean that stuff isn't bad but it certainly doesn't get a kid excited for breakfast. And what was I supposed to have on Saturday morning to watch my cartoons with! Honestly! 8-year-old me can't fight the forces of COBRA or whatever with a bowl of Farina!
Matt from Dinosaur Dracula is doing a 4 part video series on old Halloween junk food from the early days of his blog so that's fun. That green applesauce is the stuff of nightmares and I love it. It's crazy how much of this stuff I missed though, I was definitely alive and conscious during this time but I have a lot of like lost memories of the early 2000's. Must have been because of all the drinking I did.
TROMA NOW is uploading some fabulous stuff just in time for the Halloween season too. They just uploaded BASKET CASE 2 today, but there's also MANIAC COP, FRANKENHOOKER, and a bunch of new stuff to check out as well.
I've never associated Troma with Halloween, but if you squint hard enough you can fit a lot of what's in their library into that category. I can't think of anything Halloween themed made by Troma, but a monster movie is a monster movie. Oh, and the app is great by the way. I have it on my phone and I genuinely surprised with how smooth it is. I'd say it's even better than the website itself.
Meanwhile over on SHUDDER, Joe Bob is back yet again with another Halloween special; JOE BOB's HALLOWEEN HOEDOWN. I'm looking forward to this one. I believe in the past he's hosted some of the HALLOWEEN movies and gave some wonderful insight into them. I really enjoy Joe Bob's rants and harangues about movies and peoples perceptions of movies, his passion for this stuff really does shine through when he speaks deeply about how he really feels about a movie.
And while we're talking about SHUDDER, they just posted what's coming up this month on their amazing service. Already there are a bunch of classics. I think I've watched THE STUFF a million times and I'll happily watch it again.

I'm not going to lie though I am absolutely ecstatic over this. The first two seasons are both total smashers so I can't wait to see more.

And is it just me, or is the budget higher than it was previously? All the effects look so polished. Micheal Rooker for me is the big stand out of course. People often forget his role in HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER because of his MARVEL and now DC film roles.
And I guess this has become a tradition now for those of you who keep up with the network Freeform, so here's the 31 Nights of Halloween schedule for the month of October. Last year they had their HOCUS POCUS milkshake promotion with Carvel and made a specific HOCUS POCUS schedule graphic.
I think HOCUS POCUS played nearly every single day, multiple times a day last year. It does appear to be playing on rotation this year as well, but so does everything else on the list so I guess it's not the main even like it was previously. And BEETLEJUICE is shockingly nowhere to be seen on it.
I wonder if I should try and make my own list of Halloween films to watch this year. I've tried in the past but I found it tough to keep up with. I'll consider it I guess.
Man I am totally looking forward to Halloween this year.
I've really been enjoying these old cartoon and commercial compilations on YouTube. Especially this past year. It's been a nice nugget of joy to relive a pre-covid era and just bathe in the nostalgia of my youth. These shows really take me back. There are a few channels who make these and if I had any sense I would start downloading them. It's stuff like this that I really love, the archiving of old media. There's no reason lost media of any kind should exist anymore.
Plus some cartoons are just plain fun. I rewatched TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE and MEDABOTS and they're a lot better than I remember. I remember being a fan of MEDABOTS but being a real snob about American dubs when I was younger but I'm really glad I grew out of it because a lot of the jokes really made me laugh, even the dumb puns.
One of the cartoons I really loved from this era was THE RIPPING FRIENDS, which was a creation of John K., who worked on REN & STIMPY previously. It had a lot of the same retro-futuristic humor that R&S had, plus it was about superheros so I felt like it was tailor made for me. It did fall kind of flat on it's face though, and it wasn't very liked when it first came out. There was supposed to be a line of Playmates action figures but they were never produced.
I mean I like the show but it's definitely not for everyone. I feel like if it had premiered on [adult swim] or some similar network it would have done better. It felt too close to being a show for an older crowd than for kids. A lot of the aesthetics were from old sci-fi movies, Doc Samson pulp heroes, and gold age comics, all mixed with gross out humor and jokes.
I wish this sort of Saturday morning compilation stuff would have a home release, with commercials and everything included. They make nice time capsules. I never thought I'd be nostalgic for old commercials interrupting my shows but where we are. I'm even beginning to fall in love with old songs I used to hate because they bring me back to a certain time and place. It's nuts.
So we took a trip down to Virginia back on August 14th to explore the small one day convention event, The Oddities & Curiosities Expo. These take place all over the country and we've always wanted to go and finally we had our chance. I'm not used to such small conventions; normally comic book conventions (which are the kind I normally attend) are huge events, or at the very least crowded. This expo was pretty small but it was filled with such energy and personality I found myself bouncing off the wall with excitement.
Also, going anywhere these days is such a varied adventure. Covid and Delta are still pretty rampant around the world and doing anything that involves crowds feels pretty weird, but everyone at the expo seemed to be taking precaution and being mindful of one another. It was pretty stress-free.
At the expo I ran into the wonderful Artetak, who I follow on Twitter. I had no idea she was going to be there so this was such a delight. I purchased a print, a pin, and a key-chain from her table. In hindsight I should have probably purchased more stuff from her because she had so much cool stuff and just getting to meet her was something special. Probably should have asked her to sign my print too.
I also saw this amazing crafts table filled with all manner of sculpted creatures, props, and other creepy things. I had their business card but I can't seem to find it. It may have been lost on my way home. Either way, everything they had for sale was breathtakingly beautiful and gross and I wish I had left with one of their "specimen jars" but I forgot to go back for it before leaving. I'm sure I'll see them again someday at a future expo. At least I hope so.
After the convention I decided to go exploring. I found some cool stuff around the area where we were staying. Like the Secret Sandwich Society and Wong Gonzalez. I had drinks and dessert from the Secret Sandwich Society and dinner at Wong Gonzalez and both were wonderful treats. The aesthetic at Secret Sandwich Society is of course totally my jam; it's all meant to invoke secret societies of course and they sell shirts that have tarot card images on them.
I was trying to find a comic shop to go to while I was walking around and I was headed towards one when a storm hit and as the rain began to come down I spotted this bookstore by total chance. I somehow knew I had to go in. I was drawn to it by some unseen magnetic force. Obvious higher powers were telling me this place was something special.
The Richmond Book Shop was the oasis I was looking for, not just during this trip but for months; maybe years! Stores like this used to be everywhere when I was growing up but they've all gone the way of the dodo and it has left a hole in my heart. This beautiful place carries old comics, pulp books, humor magazines, newspapers, fetish pictures and adult magazines, comic prints, toys, and just about everything I need to live happily for the rest of my life.
I spent about $60 at the book store. I could not believe the stuff they sold at such reasonable prices. I got copies of CRACKED, CRAZY, UFO Magazine, PSYCHOTRONIC, a preserved R. Crumb cover from an old comic, various other comic prints, fetish photos, and a few other miscellaneous things. It was like I was making up for lost time.
I spoke with one of the owners and she told me the store has a history dating back to at least the 1920's or 1930's, and that the store itself switched owners and locations a few times in the previous decades before finding it's current spot where it's been since the 1960's. She also mentioned that she herself worked across the street from the shop at a diner and would swing by during her lunch break to pick up a newspaper or something. To think she would end up working and owning the place is so wild.
They weren't even fully open when I was there, they had closed off more than 70% of the shop to ensure that not too many people would be in the store at any given time because of Covid. So while operating at 30% they managed to send me into the maximum levels of happiness! I wish I could be there again when they fully open.
I genuinely cannot put into words the exact feeling I got while looking through the collection of STUFF that surrounded me. The best I can say is I felt ULTRA JOY. I felt young again. This place is my fountain of youth and it pains me that I live so very far away from it. I hope to go back someday. The 8 - 12 hour drive is absolutely worth it for this place, at least to a guy like me with the interests I have.
So yeah, it was a wonderful trip. I'm not sure how I've managed to travel so much over the years. I'm usually pretty broke. I think I'm just a lucky guy with some great friends. I hope you guys get to travel a bit too, even with things as they are.
And get a move on, who knows how much time we've got left!

I had meant to blog about GLORP GUM for a while now (these pictures are from months ago), but I love my GLORP shirt with all my heart. I wear it at all the special occasions I go to, and it really is a handsomely designed garment if I do say so.
The COSMIC SURGE GLORP GUM had a feint cherry flavor to it, and it temporarily gave me cosmic powers and made me supreme ruler of the whole dang universe for about .02 seconds! Nifty! The gum is long gone, but I still have my beautiful shirt and all the stickers that came with it.
If I have my way I will be buried in my GLORP shirt!
Because of health reasons I was unable to update this blog as normal. As it turns out the human body goes through horrid changes as it ages and I have to be more cautious of my habits. I, being in my late thirties, have come to realize my newly discovered limitations and it sucks. The discovery of near 20 food related allergies, the possibility that I may have a condition called Barth Syndrome, and now hypertension had me scrambling for answers. Thankfully though, I have found a bit of equilibrium in all of this apparent disorder.
I need a bit of luck to keep me going, and I feel that with Billiken's help I am able to absorb that luck from the cosmos.
Since my last post, my collection of Billiken items has grown. I now have a chalkware Billiken from 1908, one of the earliest. Both his throne and Billiken himself have their medallion from The Billiken Company Craftman's Guild. I never thought I'd own one of these since they're so rare and fragile. I feel very lucky to have purchased one for such a low cost too. He may be a little broken, but I will love him all the same.
I've come to call this particular Billiken "Grandfather". I'm not sure why. I suppose it has something to do with his frail but friendly demeanor. Like all the other Billiken items I've found myself with I have to wonder about the journey they've all been on before they've reached me. I'd like to think that this is the end of their journey so they can finally rest but who knows what's next for them.
So here's my collection so far; my three statues; 1908 chalkware Billiken, a 1909 brass bank Billiken, and a mysterious Billiken who might be of Hawaiian origin, and maybe made in the 1960's.
I also have two dolls; one is a reproduction of the 1911 Teddy Bear Billiken and a modern plush from Japan.
I have three coins; a 1908 Billiken Pocket Piece, a Peak Frean's Billiken coin premium, and a Rexall Pharmacy Gudlukk coin (who looks to be very Billiken inspired).
And lastly I have three postcards; Billiken, Balligan, and Sillgen. I plan on getting more of these Billiken postcards as they pop up online.
So as my quest to find more Billiken stuff continues, my devotion to this mostly lost and forgotten god of luck just continues to evolve. On Twitter I re-share whatever I find being posted on Japan Twitter (mostly from folks in the Osaka area), but also I find myself looking through old newspapers, magazines, and photos trying to find any traces of him.

In other news, last weekend I visited Salem, Massachusetts for the very first time in my life. It was a great trip and was one of those things I always wanted to do but never had a chance to. It was for my life-partner's birthday and I think it went super well. We saw a lot of fun and historical place while being super lame tourists at the same time. It was the perfect balance really.
We stayed at the famous Hawthorne Hotel, which is said to be haunted. We had no experiences there ourselves but plenty of "ghost hunters"/"paranormal investigators" have said they had experiences. I don't know about all that, but it was a real classy place let me tell you. It's a really beautiful place and if you have the chance to stay anywhere in Salem, this is the place.
Somehow I didn't take any pictures of our hotel room, or of the exterior of the hotel, but I did take a picture of this mural on the wall. I think it's a map of the area but I have no idea really. What do you think it is?
So, here are some of the places I visited;
Here I am with the statue dedicated to Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched fame. I actually didn't know about this statue until like 3 days before my trip so I was pretty excited to see it. I grew up on Bewitched reruns so seeing this monument to classic television left me starstruck.
Here I am at the Salem Satanic Temple. It was a lovely place. They have a wonderful art exhibition going on right now. I did feel like their gift shop left a lot to be desired, especially for being the Salem branch of the Satanic Temple (you'd think they'd lean more into the kitschy nature of their location), but they are a pretty humble place so maybe it's just not part of their vibe.
I love the Baphomet statue. It was made for people to sit on his lap so I took advantage of it. Is Baphomet a "him"? I don't want to use the wrong pronouns for this beautiful deity.
Right by the Satanic Temple is this little place called Coffee Time Bake Shop where I had a raspberry lime Rickey and some bismark donuts. All delicious and refreshing!!
Here are some random places we saw. The house from Hocus Pocus, some gift shops whose names I don't remember (there's a bunch of them), the Witch Dungeon Museum which is like a haunted house based on real life history, and The Witch House which has a ghastly history as well.
We learned during our tour of The Witch Dungeon Museum that it is pretty likely no practicing witches were killed at all during the witch hunts in Salem, and that all the lives lost were because people wanted certain plots of land so they just accused landowners of witchcraft to get what they wanted.
It's not surprising in the least if I'm honest, it just makes the whole witchsploitation tourism aspect to be a little deflated. It's still a great place filled with wonderful pagan, satanic, wiccan, and alternative lifestyle people of course, but after learning that I did see Salem in a different light.
The Coven's Cottage and Count Orlock's Nightmare Gallery did not allow photographs inside, but both were really wonderful places. The Coven's Cottage is a Norse spirituality shop filled with dried herbs, books and literature, talismans and other trinkets for those who follow Odinism.
Count Orlock's Nightmare Gallery is a monsterkid church, filled with really wonderful and lifelike monsters from throughout cinema history. The displays are simple but if you're a horror movie fiend you'll be foaming at the mouth here. I loved this place and I really wish I could have taken photos inside.
The Witch Board Museum has an amazing collection of Ouija boards, novelties, movies, etc. dating back to the early 1900's and maybe even earlier than that. A lot of cool stuff here, and some of the boards are just wild to look at.
Weirdly, I didn't pick up any souvinirs for myself, just for friends and family. I did find these though; a vending machine monster toy I picked up off of the ground while walking around, and a figure of Deet (from the Netflix Dark Crystal show) who is now a part of my Discordian shrine.
And honestly, that little blue monster guy was basically waiting for me. I love him with all my heart.
