Thinking back to old Fox Kids shows this morning

I've really been enjoying these old cartoon and commercial compilations on YouTube. Especially this past year. It's been a nice nugget of joy to relive a pre-covid era and just bathe in the nostalgia of my youth. These shows really take me back. There are a few channels who make these and if I had any sense I would start downloading them. It's stuff like this that I really love, the archiving of old media. There's no reason lost media of any kind should exist anymore.

Plus some cartoons are just plain fun. I rewatched TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE and MEDABOTS and they're a lot better than I remember. I remember being a fan of MEDABOTS but being a real snob about American dubs when I was younger but I'm really glad I grew out of it because a lot of the jokes really made me laugh, even the dumb puns.

One of the cartoons I really loved from this era was THE RIPPING FRIENDS, which was a creation of John K., who worked on REN & STIMPY previously. It had a lot of the same retro-futuristic humor that R&S had, plus it was about superheros so I felt like it was tailor made for me. It did fall kind of flat on it's face though, and it wasn't very liked when it first came out. There was supposed to be a line of Playmates action figures but they were never produced.

I mean I like the show but it's definitely not for everyone. I feel like if it had premiered on [adult swim] or some similar network it would have done better. It felt too close to being a show for an older crowd than for kids. A lot of the aesthetics were from old sci-fi movies, Doc Samson pulp heroes, and gold age comics, all mixed with gross out humor and jokes.

I wish this sort of Saturday morning compilation stuff would have a home release, with commercials and everything included. They make nice time capsules. I never thought I'd be nostalgic for old commercials interrupting my shows but where we are. I'm even beginning to fall in love with old songs I used to hate because they bring me back to a certain time and place. It's nuts.

The Mayday Mystery: Decades of Bulldada in Action

The "Mayday Mystery" has been in existence since the early 1980's. As far as we know anyway, there might be more to it than that, but very strange cryptic messages have been printed in a campus run newspaper in Arizona since at least the early 1980's. It's all very confusing with its uses of code, different languages and mathematical equations mixed with religious iconography and biblical verses.

I don't think it means anything though, or at least, it's not pointing to any larger conspiracy. It seems to me this is some sort of Discordian cabal having a bit of fun. Odds are he/she/they were alumni of the university and use the school paper as a form of communication, even with the advent of new ways of communication; I feel sticking with a niche thing like a school paper is a very Discodian choice to make, it's an fun and cost effective way to bewilder people. To me, these messages are simply bulldada.

That's just what I think though, I may very well be wrong. Whoever is behind the Mayday Mystery sure seems to be having fun with it though; if you look at the archival stuff on maydaymystery.org you can see how ornate and more complex the messages become. It's pretty wild.

Blameitonjorge has a wonderful video on the Mayday Mystery. He's circled around bulldada before; in a previous video he talked about a series of websites that use SubGenius iconography. Jorge may eventually find "Bob", or maybe even Eris. I wonder what he'll think.

All the corporate companies are pursuing sports sets and Hollywood photo sets, but rarely paint anything new or different. (Art series "fell out of fashion" in the 1990s.) "Horror Hosts! The words usually conjure up images of ghoulish TV personalities like Elvira and Zacherley. They often wear monster make-up and appear on make-shift castle sets, interrupting older monster movies and telling us a few jokes or dark puns. But those guys are not the ones who really made horror hosts popular or famous. They were building on a grand tradition that preceded televsion completely. The original horror hosts were top-of-the-shelf talents who not only introduced, but often narrated and acted in some the most terrifying shows mass-media ever produced. They were radio dramas with horror, science fiction, or murder themes. The hosts were sometimes famous, but more often mysterious, and they always caught our attention. There was something hypnotic about them. We never actually saw them, yet we visualized them in our mind, along with the many terrors they unleashed there. They established a dark mood and eerie ambiance. They carefully set the scene for the murder, dangerous experiment, or shocking adventure. And they were usually first on the scene after the blood was spilled to chuckle and provide us with a few more gory details. Anyone who heard The Mysterious Traveler, The Whistler, or Inner Sanctum's Raymond will testify to the fact that the host was one of the main attractions of the show. It just wouldn't be the same without them."

The image of Vampira has stuck with me for over twenty years, but I never knew that I would cross paths with Maila Nurmi, who played Vampira eons before The Munsters aired."

Dolli Dimples is a former cabaret character found at Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She sat in her own room away from the main dining area that was initially called the "Piano Bar" and later renamed to "The Cabaret". Dolli would play a song for guests for a game token. Later, the token box was replaced by a free show button and eventually was set up on a timer to perform at regular intervals automatically. Dolli was the first sideshow character the Pizza Time Theatre had. Later, other shows such as The King, Artie Antlers, and The Beagles were added. This is the last known working Dolli robot in the hands of a private collector. This channel is a chance to experience Dolli in all of her glory."
